Inside Bar Trading Strategy A Complete Guide

What Is an Inside Bar?

An inside bar is a candlestick pattern where the current bars high is lower than the previous bars high and the current bars low is higher than the previous bars low. In other words, the entire price range of the inside bar is inside the range of the preceding bar, which is often called the mother bar.

Because the price has contracted within the previous range, inside bars are generally interpreted as a sign of market indecision. Traders use this contraction as a potential precursor to a breakout, where the price moves sharply out of the mother bars range.

Why Traders Like Inside Bars

Inside bars offer three major advantages:

  • Clarity: The pattern is easy to spot on any timeframe, from 1minute charts to weekly charts.
  • Risk Management: The mother bar provides a natural set of stoploss levels, which can keep risk tight.
  • Versatility: Inside bars can be combined with trend, volatility, and reversal filters to fit many trading styles.

How to Identify an Inside Bar

Follow these steps on any chart:

  1. Locate a mother candle where the next candles high is lower and the next candles low is higher.
  2. Confirm that the new candles body is wholly inside the mothers range. Wicks are allowed, but the highest high and lowest low must stay within the mother candles extremes.
  3. Check that the mother bar is not too small; a very tight mother bar may indicate low liquidity and cause false breakouts.
  4. Optional: Use a volume filter. A rise in volume on the breakout candle often adds confidence.

Basic Inside Bar Rules

Entry

Enter the trade when the price breaks out of the mother bars high (for a long position) or low (for a short position). The breakout should be decisivepreferably a full candle closing beyond the mother bars boundary.

StopLoss

Place the stoploss just outside the opposite side of the mother bar. For a long trade, set the stop just below the mothers low; for a short trade, set it just above the mothers high.

TakeProfit

Common profit targets include:

  • R1 One times the distance of the mother bar.
  • R2 Two times the distance of the mother bar.
  • Trailing stop Move the stop level to the inside bars low/high as the trade progresses.

Timeframe Considerations

Inside bars appear on all timeframes, but the reliability tends to improve on higher timeframes (15minute, hourly, or daily). On very short timeframes (1minute), the pattern can be noisy and produce more false breakouts.

Enhancing the Strategy

While the pure inside bar breakout works on its own, many traders add filters to improve win rates.

Trend Filter

Only trade in the direction of the prevailing trend. A simple moving average (e.g., 20period EMA) can tell you whether the market is bullish or bearish. Take long breakouts only when price is above the EMA and short breakouts when price is below.

Volatility Filter

Use the Average True Range (ATR) to avoid trading inside bars that form during lowvolatility periods. Require the ATR to be above a threshold (e.g., the median ATR of the last 14 bars) before taking the trade.

Multiple Inside Bars

When two or more consecutive inside bars appear, the market is compressing more vigorously. A breakout after multiple inside bars often leads to a stronger move. However, waiting for multiple inside bars also reduces the number of trade opportunities.

Volume Confirmation

Higher volume on the breakout candle can be a sign of genuine interest. Consider requiring volume to be at least 1.5 times the average volume of the last 10 bars.

Advantages of the Inside Bar Strategy

  • Simplicity: The core concept is easy to learn and visualize.
  • Clear Risk Parameters: The mother bar provides a builtin stoploss level.
  • Scalable: You can apply the method to stocks, forex, commodities, and crypto.
  • Adaptable: Works in trending, ranging, and even choppy markets when combined with other filters.

Disadvantages and Pitfalls

  • False Breakouts: Especially on lowtimeframe charts, price can slip out of the mother bar only to reverse quickly.
  • Low Frequency on Higher Timeframes: The pattern may appear infrequently, limiting trade opportunities.
  • Requires Discipline: Stick to the stoploss rule; moving stops deeper into the trade is a common error.
  • Market Context Matters: Inside bars in a strong trend may behave differently than those in a sideways market.

Practical Example

EUR/USD 4Hour Chart (Hypothetical)

Mother Bar: Candle from 1.0950 (low) to 1.1020 (high).
Inside Bar: Candle ranging from 1.0975 to 1.0995, fully contained within the mother bar.

Breakout: At 1.1022, a bullish candle closes above the mother high with a volume 1.8 the average.

Trade Plan:

  • Entry: 1.1022 (breakout level)
  • StopLoss: 1.0948 (just below the mother low)
  • Target 1 (R1): 1.1022 + (1.10201.0950) = 1.1092
  • Target 2 (R2): 1.1164 (second multiple of the mother range)

The price moved to 1.1100 before retracing, hitting the first target and then extending to the second target before a small correction. The trade resulted in a 2R profit with the stoploss untouched.

Key Takeaways

The inside bar trading strategy hinges on a simple yet powerful idea: price compression signals an upcoming decision, and a breakout reveals the markets choice. By respecting the mother bars boundaries for entry and risk, you keep position sizing tight while still allowing for potentially large moves.

To increase reliability, combine the pattern with trend, volatility, and volume filters. Test the approach on a demo account, finetune your timeframe, and keep a trading journal to track performance.

When used consistently and with disciplined risk management, the inside bar can become a valuable component of a broader trading system.
