Indian National Science Academy

Promoting Scientific Excellence in India

A Beacon of Scientific Knowledge

The Indian National Science Academy stands as the premier scientific body in India, recognizing excellence, promoting scientific research, and providing guidance to policymakers and the scientific community.

About the Academy

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was established in January 1935 with the objective of promoting science in India and harnessing scientific knowledge for the cause of humanity and national welfare. As the apex body of Indian scientists representing various branches of science and technology, INSA plays a crucial role in recognizing, promoting, and nurturing talent in the field of science.

INSA operates under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and maintains its headquarters in New Delhi. The Academy serves as a forum where scientists from different disciplines come together to discuss scientific issues of national importance. It provides guidance and advice to the government and various scientific organizations on matters related to science policy and education.

The Academy's structure comprises Fellows who are elected based on their distinguished contributions to science. These Fellows represent a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines including physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, engineering, medicine, and earth sciences. Through its various activities, INSA aims to foster scientific culture, encourage innovation, and facilitate international cooperation in science and technology.

Historical Background

The Academy was founded on January 7, 1935, as the "National Institute of Sciences of India" (NISI) with the efforts of several eminent scientists including Prof. Meghnad Saha, Sir Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, and others. It was modelled after the Royal Society of London. The Academy was renamed as "Indian National Science Academy" in February 1970 to better reflect its national role in promoting scientific research and education.

Over the decades, INSA has played a pivotal role in shaping the scientific landscape of India. During the formative years of independent India, the Academy provided crucial advice to the government on establishing scientific institutions and formulating science policies. Many renowned scientists, including Nobel laureates like Dr. C.V. Raman and homi Bhabha, have been associated with the Academy as Fellows and office-bearers.

  • 1935: The National Institute of Sciences of India (NISI) was established with 27 foundation fellows including renowned scientists.
  • 1945: NISI was recognized as the premier scientific society in India by the Government of India's Scientific Manpower Committee Report.
  • 1957: The Academy published its first scientific journal and established various committees to promote different branches of science.
  • 1970: NISI was renamed as the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) to better reflect its national role.
  • 1990s-present: INSA expanded its international collaborations, introduced new fellowship programs to support young scientists, and strengthened its role as the premier scientific advisory body to the government.
