IELTS Reading Tips & Tricks for a Higher Score

1. Know the Test Format

The IELTS Academic reading paper contains three passages, each followed by 14 questions (40 questions in total). The passages become progressively harder, so you must manage your time wisely.

  • Passage 1 1314 minutes
  • Passage 2 1314 minutes
  • Passage 3 1314 minutes

All questions are multiplechoice, true/false/not given, matching, heading, summary, etc. Familiarise yourself with each type so you know exactly what the examiner expects.

2. Skim Before You Read

Spend 3045 seconds at the start of each passage to get the gist:

  • Read the title, subheadings, and any bold or italicised words.
  • Look at pictures, diagrams, and word limits for the tasks.
  • Identify the overall topic and the writers attitude.

This quick skim helps you locate the sections where the answers are hidden, saving precious minutes.

3. Use the FindLocateRead Strategy

When a question asks for specific information:

  1. Find the keywords in the question.
  2. Locate those words (or synonyms) in the passage.
  3. Read the surrounding sentences carefully to confirm the answer.

Question: Which factor most influences the Arctic melting?

Keywords: factor, influences, Arctic melting.

Locate: Search for Arctic and melting in the text, then look for words like temperature, CO, or icealbedo feedback.

4. Master the Different Question Types

Multiple Choice

Eliminate the obviously wrong choices first. Then refer back to the passage for evidence. Watch out for trap answers that are true statements but not the one the question asks for.

True/False/Not Given

Identify the exact statement in the text that matches the question. Not given means the information is absent, not just unclear.

Matching Headings

Read each paragraph quickly and decide its main idea. Then match it to the list of headings; discard any headings that contain details rather than the overall theme.

Summary Completion

Pay attention to wordlimit clues (e.g., NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS). Use synonyms from the passage and keep the grammar consistent with the gap.

5. Time Management Techniques

  • Allocate roughly 20 minutes per passage (including answering). If youre stuck on a question, move on and return later.
  • Practice with a stopwatch. Build a rhythm of 12 minutes per question.
  • Leave the last 23 minutes for a quick review of any unanswered items.

6. Expand Your Academic Vocabulary

Reading academic texts every dayarticles, reports, and textbookshelps you become comfortable with the language used in IELTS. Keep a notebook of:

  • Common collocations (e.g., significant impact, underlying cause).
  • Linking words (however, therefore, consequently).
  • Topicspecific terms (e.g., photosynthesis, quantitative analysis).

Review the list weekly and try to recognise these words when you skim passages.

7. Practice With Real Exam Material

Official Cambridge IELTS books are the best resource because the style, length, and difficulty are identical to the actual test. After each practice test:

  • Check every answer, even the ones you got right.
  • Identify patterns in the mistakes (e.g., misinterpreting not given).
  • Reread the passages focusing on the sections where you lost points.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Relying on memory: The answer is always in the text; never rely on what you think you know.
  • Skipping the word limit: Exceeding the limit automatically loses marks.
  • Changing tense or number: Keep the same grammatical form as the gap requires.
  • Overreading: Spending too much time on a single question hurts overall score.

9. TestDay Tips

  • Arrive early and bring your ID and pencils only (no pens).
  • Read the instructions carefully; a missed instruction can cost you points.
  • Stay calm. If a question feels impossible, guess intelligentlytheres no penalty for wrong answers.

10. Final Thought

Success in IELTS Reading is a blend of strategic reading, solid vocabulary, and disciplined timing. By applying the skimmingscanning techniques, mastering each question type, and practising with authentic materials, youll build confidence and improve your band score.
