IELTS Academic Writing Task2 Preparation Guide

1. Overview

Task2 of the IELTS Academic Writing module is a 250word essay that must be completed in 40 minutes. You will be presented with a question that asks you to discuss a view, present an argument, or propose solutions to a problem. Your score is based on four criteria:

• Answer every part of the question. If the prompt asks for both views and your opinion, address each view before giving your stance.

• Keep one main idea per paragraph; avoid mixing unrelated points.
• Employ referencing pronouns (this, such, these) to avoid repetition.

4.3 Lexical Resource

• Include topicspecific vocabulary (e.g., sustainable development, urbanisation).
• Show variation use synonyms instead of repeating the same word.
• Watch collocations: make a contribution, not do a contribution.

4.4 Grammatical Range & Accuracy

• Mix simple and complex sentences: combine clauses with although, because, while.
• Use passive voice where appropriate: The issue is often overlooked.
• Maintain subjectverb agreement and proper article usage.

6. Common Errors & How to Avoid Them

• Copypasting the question paraphrase instead of repeating exact wording.

• Overuse of very or really replace with stronger adjectives (e.g., crucial, significant).
