Why Helium?
Helium is the ideal tracer gas for leak detection because it is:
- Inert and chemically nonreactive.
- Very small the smallest stable atom, allowing it to permeate tiny pathways.
- Rare in the atmosphere (5 ppm), which provides a low background signal.
- Highly mobile and diffuses quickly, giving fast test results.
Principles of Helium Leak Detection
Tracer Gas Technique
The system under test is either filled with helium (internal test) or exposed to a helium environment (external test). A massspectrometer or a thermal conductivity sensor then measures any helium that escapes or enters the system.
Leak rates are expressed commonly in:
- Standard cubic centimeters per second (sccs)
- Pascalliters per second (PaLs)

Common Helium Leak Detection Methods
- Vacuum Method (External Test)
The part is placed in a sealed chamber that is evacuated. Helium is introduced at a low pressure onto the external surface. Any helium entering the chamber is pumped into the detector. - Pressure Method (Internal Test)
The component is pressurized with helium (or a heliumenriched mixture). The detector samples the surrounding atmosphere for escaping helium. - Sniffer Method
A handheld probe (sniffer) equipped with a helium sensor scans the surface of a part that is internally flooded with helium. The probe detects local increases in helium concentration. - MassSpectrometer Leak Detector (MSLD)
The most accurate approach uses a quadrupole or magnetic sector mass spectrometer tuned to the mass2 peak (the molecular mass of helium). It provides high specificity and fast response.

Execution
- Gradually increase helium pressure until the target leak rate is measurable avoid overpressurizing fragile parts.
- Allow sufficient dwell time for the system to reach equilibrium (typically 30seconds to a few minutes).
- When using a sniffer, move the probe slowly (1cms) to avoid missing small leaks.
Data Interpretation
Consider background helium concentration, pumpdown rate, and detector response time. A sudden spike often indicates a localized leak; a steady lowlevel reading may suggest a distributed leak.
If the measured leak rate exceeds the specification, retest after tightening fasteners or replacing seals before deeming the component nonconforming.
Advantages and Limitations
