Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA)
Overview
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, commonly known simply as RTA, is the publictransport provider for Cuyahoga County and parts of neighboring counties in Northeast Ohio. Established in 1975, the agency operates a network of buses, rail lines, and paratransit services that connect downtown Cleveland with suburbs, universities, hospitals, and major employment centers.
RTAs mission is to provide reliable, safe, and sustainable mobility options that improve the quality of life for residents, support economic development, and protect the environment.
History
Before RTAs formation, Clevelands transit was a patchwork of private streetcar and bus companies. Financial difficulties and declining ridership in the 1960s prompted the state and local governments to consider a unified system. After several years of study, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation that created RTA, and it officially began operations on October 30, 1975.
Key milestones include:
- 1975: RTA takes over former private bus routes.
- 1980: Introduction of the Metro bus rapid transit concept on heavily traveled corridors.
- 1992: Launch of the Red Line, Clevelands first heavyrail rapid transit line, running from Cleveland State University to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
- 2004: Opening of the Blue Line (formerly the East 55th Street line) connecting Shaker Square to the beach neighborhoods.
- 2015: Adoption of the RTA Flex ondemand service in select suburbs.
- 20202023: Transition to a modern fleet featuring hybrid and electric buses.
Core Services
Bus Network
RTA operates more than 150 fixedroute bus lines, including local, express, and limitedstop services. The network covers:
- Downtown Cleveland and the Loop.
- Major suburbs such as Lakewood, Parma, and Shaker Heights.
- Key destinations: University Circle, West Side Market, the Cleveland Clinic, and Cuyahoga Community College.
Heavy Rail The Red Line
The Red Line is a 26mile, 33station rapidtransit line that runs northsouth, linking Cleveland State University, Midtown, the historic West Side, and the airport. Trains run every 1015 minutes during peak hours and every 2030 minutes offpeak.
Light Rail The Blue & Green Lines
These two lines share tracks through the east side before diverging. The Blue Line heads east to the LeBron Jamesnamed Stadium station, while the Green Line terminates at the historic Shaker Square.
Paratransit RTA Access
RTA Access provides doortodoor service for riders with disabilities who cannot use the regular fixedroute system. Eligibility is determined through a straightforward application process.
OnDemand RTA Flex
Flex offers a ridesharingstyle service in lowdensity neighborhoods. Users request a pickup via a mobile app or phone, and a small shuttle picks them up within a 15minute window.
Fares & Passes
RTA uses a zonefree fare structure. As of 2024, the basic fare is $2.50 for a single ride on any bus or rail line. Reduced fares are available for seniors, students, and persons with disabilities.

All passes can be purchased online, at ticket vending machines, or at RTA Customer Service Centers. Mobile tickets are supported through the RTA Go app, which also provides realtime arrival information.
Future Plans & Projects
RTAs longrange vision, titled RTA 2030, focuses on three pillars: expanding service coverage, modernizing the fleet, and improving rider experience.
Service Expansion
- BlueYellow Connector: A new bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor linking the suburbs of Westlake and Beachwood with a dedicated lane on the I90 corridor.
- North Shore Line Extension: Preliminary studies to extend the Red Line northward to Lake Erie Islands ferry terminals.
Fleet Modernization
By 2027 RTA aims to have 50% of its buses zeroemissioneither batteryelectric or hydrogen fuelcell. The agency has already received federal grants to purchase 40 electric buses.
Technology & Rider Experience
- Realtime crowding information displayed on bus stop shelters.
- Contactless fare media that integrates with regional creditcard networks.
- Expanded WiFi coverage on all rail cars and major bus routes.
Community engagement remains a central component of every project. RTA hosts public workshops quarterly and maintains an online portal for feedback.
