Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE)

Overview

The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) are a series of tests required for individuals who want to become certified teachers in the state of Florida. Administered by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) in partnership with Pearson VUE, the FTCE measures knowledge and skills essential for effective teaching. Passing the required exams is a prerequisite for obtaining a Florida Teaching Certificate, which qualifies candidates to teach in public schools.

Components of the FTCE

The FTCE consists of three main groups of exams:

1. General Knowledge Test (GKT)

All prospective teachers must pass the GKT. It covers four content areas:

  • Reading, Language, and Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

2. Pedagogy Tests

These evaluate teaching methods and classroom management. Required for most candidates:

  • General Pedagogy (GP) designed for elementary and middleschool teachers.
  • Subject Area Pedagogy (SAP) specific to the subject the teacher will instruct (e.g., Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc.).

3. Content Knowledge Tests (CKT)

These assess mastery of the academic content that teachers will deliver. Candidates choose the CKT(s) that align with their certification area, such as:

  • Elementary Education (K5)
  • Middle School Mathematics (68)
  • High School English Language Arts (912)
  • Special Education, etc.

Preparing for the FTCE

Effective preparation combines familiarization with the test format, content review, and practice testing.

Study Materials

  • Official FTCE Study Guides (available for purchase on the FLDOE website).
  • Commercial prep books (e.g., Kaplan, Mometrix, and Teacher Test Prep).
  • Online courses and webinars tailored to each exam component.
  • Free resources such as sample questions and practice tests on the FTCE portal.

Study Strategies

  • Plan a schedule: Allocate 12 hours per day over 812 weeks.
  • Focus on weak areas: Use diagnostic tests to pinpoint gaps.
  • Practice under timed conditions: Simulate the test environment to build stamina.
  • Review testtaking tips: Learn how to eliminate wrong answers and manage time.

Tip: Many candidates find that joining a study group or forum (e.g., Reddits r/FTCE or Facebook teacherprep groups) provides motivation and access to shared resources.

Registration Process

  1. Create a Pearson VUE account: Visit pearsonvue.com and select Florida Teacher Certification Exams.
  2. Choose the exam(s): Select the GKT, GP, SAP, and/or CKT(s) you need.
  3. Pick a test center: Florida has hundreds of Pearson VUE locations; choose one convenient to you.
  4. Pay the fee: Fees vary by exam (approximately $84 for GKT, $84 for GP, $84 for each SAP/CKT). Payment is accepted via credit/debit cards.
  5. Schedule your test date: Slots fill quickly, especially during peak periods (summer and early fall). Book at least two weeks in advance.

After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with your appointment details and instructions for arriving at the test center.

Results, Scoring, and Retaking

Scores are reported on a scale of 100300. The passing score for all FTCE components is 250.

When Scores Arrive

  • Computerbased tests: results are typically available online within 10 business days.
  • Printed score reports can be requested if needed for official records.

If You Do Not Pass

  • You may retake an exam after a 45day waiting period.
  • There is no limit to the number of attempts, but each retake incurs the full exam fee.
  • Use the score report to identify the sections where you fell short and focus study efforts there.
