1. Understand the Purpose
A faculty application letteroften called a cover letter or statement of purposeserves three main functions:
- Introduce yourself and explain why you are a good fit for the department.
- Showcase your scholarship, teaching, and service record in a way that aligns with the institutions needs.
- Demonstrate your communication skills and professional tone.
Recruiters read dozens of these letters, so clarity and relevance are paramount.
2. Research the Institution
Before you start writing, gather information about:
- Departmental research themes and recent publications.
- Teaching programs, course offerings, and pedagogical approaches.
- Strategic priorities (e.g., diversity, community engagement, interdisciplinary work).
Reference these specifics in your letter; generic statements quickly lose impact.
4. Writing Tips for Each Section
Opening Paragraph
Grab attention with a brief statement of your expertise and why the role excites you. Example:
Dear Dr. Martinez and Search Committee, I am writing to apply for the Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology position at Riverside University, as advertised on HigherEdJobs. My recent work on CRISPRbased gene regulation aligns directly with the departments focus on functional genomics, and I am eager to contribute to both research and undergraduate education at Riverside.
Research Fit
Be specific. Mention key publications, grant funding, and collaborative networks that demonstrate impact.
- Summarize major findings in onetwo sentences.
- Link your future research agenda to the departments strengths.
- Show evidence of external funding or competitive awards.
Teaching Philosophy & Experience
Use concrete examples. If you developed a new lab module, describe the learning outcomes and student feedback.
My teaching philosophy centers on active learning and inquirydriven labs. In the Genomics Lab I designed for sophomore majors, students performed RNAseq analyses and presented findings in a poster session, raising the courses average evaluation from 3.6 to 4.4 (out of 5) in two years.
Service and Outreach
Highlight activities that show commitment to the academic community and broader society.
- Committee chair or member roles (e.g., curriculum redesign).
- Mentoring undergraduate researchers or graduate students.
- Public lectures, science outreach, or media appearances.
Closing Paragraph
Reiterate enthusiasm and provide a call to action.
I am excited about the possibility of joining Riversides vibrant faculty and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my research and teaching can advance the departments goals. Thank you for considering my application.
