What is the European Voluntary Service?

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) is a key action of the Erasmus+ programme that enables young people aged 1830 (or 1730 in some cases) to volunteer abroad for periods ranging from two weeks to twelve months. Participants work with nonprofit organisations, charities, NGOs and public institutions in any of the 34 participating countries, gaining handson experience while contributing to community projects in fields such as culture, environment, social inclusion, sport and education.

EVS is not a paid job; however, volunteers receive a modest financial contribution that covers travel, accommodation, food and a personal allowance. The programme also provides insurance, training, and a certificate that recognises the skills acquired during the placement.

Eligibility & Who Can Apply

• Age: Typically 1830 years old (some exceptions for 1730).
• Residency: Open to EU/EEA nationals and, in many cases, to thirdcountry citizens who are legally resident in an EU member state.
• Language: Basic knowledge of the host countrys language is helpful, but not always mandatory.
• Commitment: Volunteers must be available for the full duration of the placement, which can be as short as two weeks but is usually three to twelve months.

Both individuals and groups (e.g., student organisations, youth clubs) can apply, although the final placement must be arranged through an organisation sending the volunteer (OSC) and an organisation receiving the volunteer (ORC).
