Indian Railways (IR) is one of the worlds largest railway networks, carrying over 23 million passengers and moving more than 1.2 billion tonnes of freight each year. While it provides a vital economic backbone, the sheer scale of operations also creates significant environmental pressures. Recognising this, the Ministry of Railways has institutionalised a comprehensive environmental management framework that aligns with national climate commitments, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the National Action Plan on Climate Change. The framework is built around four pillars: Each pillar is supported by policy directives, regulatory compliance (e.g., Environment Impact Assessment under the EIA Notification, 2006), and a network of dedicated Environmental Management Units (EMUs) at zonal and divisional levels. Green corridors involve the planting of native trees and shrubs along the rightofway (ROW). As of 2024, more than 1.2 million saplings have been planted across 24,000 km of track. The initiative reduces soil erosion, curbs airborne dust, and provides habitat for local fauna. Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are now present at over 1,500 stations and depots. The combined capacity exceeds 1,200MW, generating roughly 2.5TWh of clean electricity annuallyequivalent to the power consumption of about 1.2million households. Solar roofs on platform shelters and solar farms on vacant land have become a standard design feature for new station projects. Newer locomotives such as the WAG9 and WDP4D use advanced AC traction technology, delivering up to 25% lower fuel consumption compared with older models. The introduction of hybrid dieselelectric and fully electric passenger coaches further cuts diesel usage. RWH systems are installed at over 3,200 stations, capturing an estimated 75million litres of water per year for nonpotable uses such as cleaning, landscaping, and toilet flushing. The Railways operates three WtE units at Vizag, Mandi, and Katpadi, processing 150tonnes of solid waste daily and producing 20MW of electricity fed back into the grid. Electrification is the cornerstone of IRs carbonreduction strategy. By March 2024, more than 80% of the broadgauge network ( 77,000km) is electrified, up from 55% a decade earlier. Full electrification is projected by 2030, which will cut diesel consumption by an estimated 2.5million tonnes of oil per year. All major depots and workshops undergo annual energy audits. Findings are fed into a centralised Energy Management Information System (EMIS) that tracks realtime consumption, identifies anomalies, and triggers corrective actions. All stations now have colourcoded bins for organic, recyclable, and hazardous waste. Staff training programmes ensure a compliance rate of over 85% for proper segregation. Steel rails removed during track renewal are sent to steel mills for recycling, achieving a recovery rate of 98%. Wooden sleepers are either reused after treatment or converted into biochar. The Railways banned singleuse plastic bottles on platforms in 2021 and introduced biodegradable cutlery in pantry cars. By 2024, plastic waste generated on trains has dropped by 40%. Over 150 underpasses and overpasses have been constructed to facilitate safe animal movement across tracks, especially in tiger corridors of the Western Ghats and the Sundarbans. Abandoned railway lands are being converted into community forests. The Green Track initiative at Mysore Junction reclaimed 12ha of derelict land, now supporting over 30 native species of trees and shrubs. Remotesensing and GIS tools monitor vegetation health, soil erosion, and water bodies within the railway network. Data is shared with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for coordinated action.
