English General Class XI Examination Specifications

1. Overview

The English General paper for Class XI is designed to assess the learners proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as their ability to analyse and interpret literary and nonliterary texts. It is a part of the broader secondary school curriculum and aligns with the national educational standards. The examination aims to develop critical thinking, creative expression, and effective communication in English.

2. Exam Structure

  • Poetry: Themes, literary devices (metaphor, simile, alliteration, enjambment), tone, and poets intent.
  • Prose: Characterisation, setting, plot development, narrative perspective, and moral/ethical dilemmas.
  • Drama: Dialogue analysis, stage directions, conflict, and dramatic structure.
  • Critical Response: Comparative analysis, evaluation of techniques, and construction of coherent arguments.

4. Assessment Criteria

Marks are allocated based on the following universal criteria, applied consistently across both sections.

  • Understanding of Text: Accuracy in interpreting meaning, themes and purpose.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to identify literary techniques and evaluate their effect.
  • Language Use: Grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Organization & Structure: Logical flow, paragraphing, and appropriate linking devices.
  • Creativity & Originality: Particularly for writing tasks, freshness of ideas and personal voice.

Each question includes a rubric that specifies the distribution of marks for content, language, and presentation. For example, a 15mark writing task may be broken down as:

  • Content & relevance 6 marks
