Doon Public School Lunch Program

Program Overview

The Doon Public School Lunch Program was launched in 2015 with the aim of providing all students with a balanced, nutritious meal each school day. Funded through a combination of municipal grants, parentteacher association contributions, and local business sponsorships, the program serves breakfast and lunch to children from kindergarten through grade 8.

Every meal is prepared onsite in a certified kitchen that follows provincial food safety regulations. Staffed by a dedicated culinary team, the kitchen supplies fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while adhering to the Ontario Food Guide.

Core Goals

• Nutrition: Ensure that every child receives a meal that meets at least 30% of daily recommended nutrients.
• Equity: Remove financial barriers so that no student misses a meal because of cost.
• Academic Success: Improve concentration, attendance, and overall academic performance.
• Community Engagement: Involve parents, local farms, and volunteers in the food system.
• Education: Teach children about healthy eating habits and sustainability.

Menu & Nutrition

Menus rotate on a fourweek cycle and are designed by a registered dietitian. Sample items include:

• Grilled chicken wrap with lettuce, tomato, and a wholegrain tortilla.
• Lentil and vegetable stew served with brown rice.
• Wholegrain pasta primavera with a light tomatobasil sauce.
• Seasonal fruit cups and lowfat yogurt.
• Homemade baked oatmeal with berries for breakfast.

All meals are free of artificial preservatives, and options for allergies (glutenfree, nutfree, dairyfree) are clearly labeled.

Student Participation

Participation rates have steadily increased since the programs inception. In the 20242025 school year, 92% of enrolled students ate at least one meal per day, up from 74% in 2016. The program is open to every student without registration fees; families simply need to sign a consent form.

Volunteers & Community Partnerships

The success of the lunch program depends heavily on community support. Local farms donate fresh produce, while the Doon Rotary Club funds kitchen equipment upgrades. Volunteer parents assist with kitchen prep, lunchtime supervision, and nutrition education workshops.

In 2023, a partnership with Green Harvest Gardens began, providing weekly deliveries of organic carrots, apples, and leafy greens. The collaboration also includes a Garden to Table curriculum where students grow herbs in school gardens and use them in recipes.

Impact & Results

Research conducted by the school board shows a positive correlation between consistent meal consumption and academic outcomes. Since the launch of the lunch program:

• Reading proficiency scores rose by 7%.
• Math proficiency scores increased by 5%.
• Student absenteeism dropped by 12%.
• Behavioral referrals fell by 9%.

Teachers report that students are more attentive during morning lessons and have higher energy levels throughout the day.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, the Doon Public School aims to expand the program in three ways:

1. FarmtoSchool Expansion: Increase the share of locally sourced ingredients to 50% of total purchases by 2027.
2. Nutrition Education: Integrate a quarterly cooking class for grades 48, teaching students basic culinary skills.
3. Technology Integration: Launch a mobile app that allows families to view daily menus, nutritional information, and provide feedback in real time.

Funding for these initiatives will be pursued through provincial grants, corporate sponsorships, and an annual Taste of Doon fundraiser.
