Understanding consumption patterns and health implications
Overview
High dietary salt intake is recognised worldwide as a major modifiable risk factor for hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke. While publichealth agencies recommend limiting sodium to less than 2g per day (about 5g of salt), many populations regularly exceed this amount.
This survey was conducted to capture current salt consumption patterns, identify major food sources of sodium, and evaluate public awareness of dietary guidelines across diverse demographic groups.
Methodology
Study Design
A crosssectional questionnaire was distributed online and in community centres between January and March 2026. A total of 4,200 respondents aged 1875 completed the survey.
Data Collection
Selfreported daily salt use (teaspoons, packets, and added during cooking).
24hour dietary recall for a subsample of 800 participants.
Knowledge assessment (five true/false statements about recommended intake).
Demographic information age, gender, region, education, and health status.
Statistical Analysis
Descriptive statistics summarise consumption levels. Logistic regression evaluates the association between high salt intake (>5g/day) and variables such as age, BMI, and awareness of guidelines.
Key Results
Overall Consumption
Average selfreported intake was 8.4g of salt per day (SD=3.2g). Only 12% of participants reported consumption within the recommended limit.

Awareness of Recommendations
Only 38% correctly identified the maximum recommended daily salt intake. Awareness was highest among respondents with a university degree (55%) and lowest among those with secondary education only (24%).
Important finding: High salt intake was significantly associated with obesity (OR=1.7, 95%CI1.42.1) and lack of awareness of guidelines (OR=2.3, 95%CI1.92.8).
Health Impact of Excessive Salt
Excessive sodium increases blood volume, leading to higher arterial pressure. Longterm effects include:
