Special Considerations

Pregnancy and Neural Tube Defects

Adequate folate intake before and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects. The recommended intake increases to 600 mcg DFE during pregnancy. Women capable of becoming pregnant are advised to consume 400 mcg of folic acid daily from fortified foods, supplements, or both, in addition to consuming food folate from a varied diet.

B-12 Interaction

High doses of folic acid can mask the hematological symptoms of vitamin B-12 deficiency, potentially allowing neurological damage to progress undetected. Adults over 50 should be mindful of their B-12 status, especially when considering high-dose folic acid supplements.
