Deforestation & Forest Degradation

What Is Deforestation?

Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees from a forested area, converting the land to nonforest use such as agriculture, urban development, or mining. When trees are cut down but the land remains forested, the process is called forest degradation. Degradation reduces the quality, structure, and ecological functions of a forest without completely clearing it.

Main Drivers

  • Agricultural expansion: Cattle ranching, soy, palm oil and other cash crops clear large tracts of forest.
  • Logging: Both legal and illegal timber extraction for wood products and paper.
  • Infrastructure development: Roads, dams, and urban sprawl fragment forest landscapes.
  • Mining: Openpit mining removes vegetation and contaminates soils.
  • Fire: Intentional slashandburn agriculture and accidental wildfires.

Environmental & Social Impacts

Forests perform vital ecosystem services. Their loss triggers a cascade of consequences:

Climate Change

Forests store about 289gigatonnes of carbon. Cutting them releases CO, accounting for roughly 10% of global emissions each year.

Biodiversity Loss

More than 80% of terrestrial species depend on forests. Deforestation drives habitat loss, pushing many species toward extinction.

Water Cycle Disruption

Trees regulate rainfall and protect watersheds. Deforestation can lead to altered river flows, increased flooding, and reduced water quality.

Indigenous Peoples

Approximately 370million people worldwide rely on forests for their livelihoods, culture, and identity. Land clearance often leads to displacement and loss of traditional knowledge.

When we cut down a forest, we are cutting down the potential of a whole planet to sustain future generations. UNFAO

Pathways to Mitigation

Policy & Governance

  • Strengthen landuse planning and enforce antideforestation laws.
  • Implement REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) incentives.

Sustainable Production

  • Promote certified timber, palm oil, soy, and beef (e.g., FSC, RSPO).
  • Support agroforestry and shadegrown crops that preserve canopy cover.

Restoration & Reforestation

  • Nativespecies planting projects that restore ecological function.
  • Communityled forest management that combines livelihoods with conservation.

Consumer Action

Choose products with credible sustainability labels, reduce meat consumption, and support organizations working on forest protection.
