Mastering DBT Mindfulness Skills
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment. At its core lies the practice of Mindfulness. In DBT, mindfulness is not just a meditative exercise; it is a fundamental skill set used to focus the mind, reduce emotional suffering, and increase control over one's attention.
The "What" Skills
The "What" skills define the actions you take while practicing mindfulness. There are three components:
- Observe: This involves noticing your internal and external experiences. It is like being a silent reporter. You simply note the experience without trying to change it, push it away, or label it. When you observe, you are essentially stepping back from the content of your thoughts and emotions.
- Describe: Once you have observed an event or emotion, you put it into words. By labeling an experience (e.g., "I am feeling a sense of tightness in my chest"), you move from being completely immersed in the emotion to viewing it objectively.
- Participate: This is the act of becoming one with the current activity. It means letting go of self-consciousness and fully engaging in the moment. When you participate, you are not judging your actions or worrying about the outcome; you are simply present.
The "How" Skills
The "How" skills describe *how* you should behave while practicing the "What" skills to ensure they are effective.
Non-judgmentally: See the facts, but do not assign "good" or "bad" labels to them. When you notice a judgment arising, simply acknowledge it as another thought and return to the present.
- One-Mindfully: This means doing one thing at a time. If you are washing dishes, only wash dishes. If you are talking to a friend, only focus on that conversation. Multitasking is the enemy of mindfulness.
- Effectively: Do what is necessary to achieve your goal, rather than doing what you "feel" like doing. Focus on what works in the given situation, even if it feels uncomfortable.
The Wise Mind Concept
One of the most important concepts in DBT is the synthesis of two states of mind:
- Reasonable Mind: This is the rational, logical, and planning part of you. It is focused on facts and task-oriented behaviors.
- Emotion Mind: This is the part of you controlled by feelings. It is often reactive and driven by internal states.
Wise Mind is the integration of these two. It is the intuitive knowledge that knows when to use logic and when to honor emotion. It is often described as the "inner quiet" that exists beneath the noise of thoughts and feelings. Accessing Wise Mind is the ultimate goal of mindfulness practice.
Benefits of Regular Practice
Consistent application of these skills allows individuals to gain distance from painful thoughts. By observing rather than reacting, you create a "space" between a stimulus and your response. This space is where personal agency lives. Instead of being hijacked by an impulse, you choose your actions based on your values and your long-term goals.
Practicing mindfulness does not mean eliminating pain or difficult emotions; rather, it changes your relationship with those experiences. By accepting the present moment as it iswithout trying to fight realityyou significantly reduce the amount of secondary suffering caused by resistance and avoidance.
