Dayanand Science College, Latur, established in 1961, is one of the premier educational institutions in Maharashtra, India. SWAYAM-NPTEL Initiative

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is a program initiated by the Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy: access, equity, and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc, is one of the largest online education platforms in India. It offers free online courses and certification in engineering, sciences, technology, management, and humanities. Through the Local Chapter mechanism, NPTEL aims to create awareness among students about these courses and encourage them to register and benefit from the quality educational content.

Establishment of Local Chapter at Dayanand Science College Latur

Dayanand Science College, Latur established its SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapter in 2018 with a vision to enhance the learning experience of students by providing them access to world-class educational resources. The Local Chapter acts as a bridge between the students and the NPTEL platform, facilitating registration, providing technical support, organizing awareness sessions, and monitoring the progress of students enrolled in various courses.

During the academic year 2020-21, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Local Chapter continued its mission with renewed vigor. The pandemic necessitated a shift towards online learning, making the SWAYAM-NPTEL courses even more relevant and beneficial for students. The college administration provided complete support to the Local Chapter's activities, recognizing their importance in ensuring uninterrupted quality education.

Objectives of the Local Chapter (2020-21)

• To increase student registration for SWAYAM-NPTEL courses by at least 30% compared to the previous academic year.
• To ensure successful completion of courses by 80% of registered students.
• To organize at least 10 orientation and awareness sessions throughout the year.
• To establish peer learning groups to facilitate better understanding of course content.
• To recognize and reward high achievers to motivate more students.
• To integrate SWAYAM-NPTEL courses with the regular curriculum wherever possible.
• To collaborate with other local chapters for exchange of best practices.

Activities Conducted in 2020-21

Orientation Programs

The Local Chapter organized 12 orientation programs throughout the academic year. These online sessions were aimed at introducing new students to the SWAYAM-NPTEL platform, explaining the registration process, highlighting popular courses, and providing tips for successful course completion. The orientation programs saw an average attendance of 150 students per session.

Awareness Campaigns

A month-long awareness campaign was conducted in September 2020 to promote the benefits of online learning through SWAYAM-NPTEL. The campaign included social media outreach, email communications, virtual poster competitions, and testimonials from past successful participants. These efforts resulted in a 45% increase in new registrations compared to the previous year.

Tech Support Sessions

Dedicated technical support sessions were held every Friday to assist students facing difficulties with the platform. These sessions were conducted by senior students who had successfully completed multiple NPTEL courses. An online help desk was also established to address queries throughout the week.

Peer Learning Groups

Peer learning groups were formed based on the courses students enrolled in. Certificate Distribution Ceremony

A virtual certificate distribution ceremony was held on April 10, 2021, to recognize the efforts and achievements of students who successfully completed NPTEL courses during 2020-21.
