What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and subsequently spread globally, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. The virus primarily affects the respiratory system but can also impact other organs.
Symptoms
COVID-19 symptoms range from mild to severe and may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Common symptoms include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough and shortness of breath
- Fatigue, muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Some people may have COVID-19 without experiencing any symptoms (asymptomatic) but can still transmit the virus to others. Severe complications can include pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, organ failure, and death, particularly in older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
Transmission
The SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets and small particles (aerosols) expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes. Transmission occurs more easily in:
- Indoor spaces with poor ventilation
- Crowded settings
- Close contact (within about 6 feet) with infected individuals
Airborne transmission may also occur, particularly in enclosed spaces with inadequate ventilation. People can become infected by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching their face, though this is less common than direct transmission.

Vaccination
Getting vaccinated remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.
Face Masks
Wearing well-fitting masks in public spaces helps reduce virus transmission, especially in areas with high community spread.
Physical Distancing
Maintaining at least 6 feet of distance from others reduces the risk of virus exposure.
Hand Hygiene

This condition, often called Long COVID, can include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties ("brain fog"), heart problems, and various other symptoms.
