The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is an independent agency of the United States government created to protect consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices in the financial marketplace. Its core mission is threefold: All of the CFPBs actions are guided by the principle that a wellinformed consumer is the best defense against financial harm. The CFPB was established under the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which was signed into law on July 21, 2010, in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The agency began operating on July 21, 2011, with the intent to fill a gap in oversight that left many consumers vulnerable to predatory lending, opaque fee structures, and misleading marketing. Key milestones include: The CFPB creates regulations that govern how banks, credit unions, mortgage servicers, debt collectors, and other financial entities operate. These rules address interestrate caps, fee disclosures, advertising standards, and loanorigination practices. Through onsite examinations and data analysis, the bureau monitors compliance with its rules. It can issue supervisory letters, require corrective actions, and, in severe cases, impose civil penalties. Anyone can submit a complaint online, by phone, or by mail. The CFPB forwards the complaint to the relevant company, tracks the response, and shares aggregate data publicly. Resources such as 101 guides, webinars, and interactive tools help consumers understand topics ranging from credit scores to studentloan repayment. The agency publishes research reports, market studies, and the Consumer Complaint Database, a valuable source of insight for policymakers and scholars. Since its inception, the CFPB has taken thousands of enforcement actions. These actions fall into three broad categories: Highprofile cases include settlements with major banks over mortgageorigination abuses, actions against debtcollection agencies for harassing tactics, and recent litigation targeting undisclosed fees in prepaid card products.
