What is Coastal Erosion?

Coastal erosion is the natural process where waves, tides, and currents wear away the shoreline, removing sediment and rock. While the ocean has always reshaped coastlines, human activities and climate change have accelerated the rate in many regions.

Key drivers of erosion include:

  • Wave energy: Strong, persistent waves can break down rock and sand.
  • Sealevel rise: Higher water levels allow waves to reach further inland.
  • Storm surges: Shortterm spikes in water level intensify erosion.
  • Human interference: Dams, seawalls, and sand mining disturb natural sediment flow.

Tidal Flooding: A Growing Threat

Tidal flooding, sometimes called nuisance flooding, occurs when high tides exceed the capacity of coastal defenses or natural landforms. It is often linked to king tides, which are especially high tides that happen a few times each year.

Major factors behind tidal flooding include:

  • Sealevel rise every millimeter adds to the baseline water level.
  • Land subsidence sinking ground amplifies flood depth.
  • Reduced natural buffers loss of dunes, mangroves, and wetlands.
  • Infrastructure limitations outdated drainage systems and lowlying roads.

Land Loss from Combined Forces

When erosion and tidal flooding occur together, the result is often permanent land loss. Beaches shrink, marshes become permanently inundated, and oncehabitable coastal zones become unusable.

Examples of severe land loss:

  • The Louisiana coastline, where an estimated 25,000 square feet of land disappears each hour.
  • Bangladeshs Sundarbans, where rising tides and erosion are reducing mangrove cover.
  • Californias San Francisco Bay, where tidal wetlands have declined by more than 80% in the past century.

Impacts on People and Ecosystems

Economic costs arise from damaged property, lost tourism revenue, and higher insurance premiums. In the United States, coastal flood damage exceeded $30billion in the last decade alone.

Ecological consequences include loss of habitat for fish, birds, and marine mammals. Dune and marsh vegetation that stabilises sediments is often the first casualty, creating a feedback loop that speeds up erosion.

Social challenges involve displacement of communities, especially lowincome and Indigenous groups who rely on the coast for livelihood and cultural identity.

Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies

Addressing coastal erosion and tidal flood land loss requires a mix of engineering, policy, and naturebased solutions.

NatureBased Approaches

  • Living shorelines: Installing native vegetation, oyster reefs, and saltmarsh platforms to absorb wave energy.
  • Beach nourishment: Periodic addition of sand to rebuild eroded beaches.
  • Restoring wetlands: Reestablishing mangroves and tidal marshes to act as buffers.

Engineered Solutions

  • Seawalls and revetments protect critical infrastructure but can increase downstream erosion.
  • Managed retreat relocating structures away from highrisk zones.
  • Elevated roads and flood gates improve resilience of existing transport routes.

Policy & Planning

  • Updating flood maps to reflect future sealevel scenarios.
  • Incentivising property owners to adopt floodresilient designs.
  • Integrating climate risk into zoning and coastal development regulations.

Looking Ahead

Scientific projections suggest that, without significant mitigation, sea level could rise 0.61.1m by 2100, dramatically increasing both erosion rates and tidal flood frequency. Communities that act nowby protecting natural buffers, improving infrastructure, and planning for managed retreatstand the best chance of preserving coastal land and the livelihoods it supports.
