The literary component introduces students to selected poems, short stories, and excerpts from novels or plays. The prescribed texts typically include:

  • Poetry: works by poets such as Robert Frost, Rabindranath Tagore, Maya Angelou, and contemporary Indian poets.
  • Short Stories: stories by authors like William Somerset Maugham, R.K. Narayan, Ruskin Bond, and Sahitya Akademi awardwinning writers.
  • Prose Extracts: passages from classic novels (e.g., *To Kill a Mockingbird*) and modern Indian English literature.

Students study themes, characterization, literary devices, and cultural context, followed by analytical questions and essay prompts.

2.4 Language (Grammar & Usage)

This part reviews and extends grammatical structures needed for precise communication:

  • Tenses, modals and conditionals
  • Active and passive voice
  • Direct and indirect speech
  • Prepositions, conjunctions and determiners
  • Word formation prefixes, suffixes, compounds
  • Sentence transformation and error detection

Practice includes fillintheblanks, sentence correction, and transformation exercises.

3. Assessment Pattern

Examinations are usually divided into two papers.
