Introduction to Quadrilaterals

Definition: A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides (edges), four vertices (corners), and four angles. The sum of the interior angles of any quadrilateral is 360 degrees.

1. Parallelogram

5. Trapezium

A quadrilateral with one pair of opposite sides parallel.

  • Only one pair of opposite sides is parallel
  • The parallel sides are called bases and the non-parallel sides are called legs

6. Kite

A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides equal.

  • Two pairs of adjacent sides are equal
  • One pair of opposite angles are equal
  • Diagonals intersect at right angles
  • One diagonal is bisected by the other

Construction of Quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral can be uniquely constructed when the following measurements are given:

  1. Four sides and one diagonal
  2. Three sides and two included angles
  3. Two adjacent sides and three angles
  4. Three sides and one included diagonal
  5. Two diagonals and three sides

Construction 1: When Four Sides and One Diagonal are Given

Example: Construct a quadrilateral ABCD where AB = 4 cm, BC = 5 cm, CD = 6 cm, DA = 7 cm, and AC = 8 cm.

Construction 2: When Three Sides and Two Included Angles are Given

Example: Construct a quadrilateral PQRS where PQ = 4 cm, QR = 5 cm, RS = 6 cm, Q = 120, and R = 90.

  1. Draw QR = 5 cm using a ruler.
  2. At point Q, construct an angle of 120 and draw QP = 4 cm.
  3. At point R, construct an angle of 90 and draw RS = 6 cm.
  4. Join PS to complete the quadrilateral PQRS.

Construction 3: When Two Adjacent Sides and Three Angles are Given

Example: Construct a quadrilateral ABCD where AB = 5 cm, BC = 6 cm, A = 75, B = 120, and C = 90.

  1. Draw AB = 5 cm using a ruler.
  2. At point A, construct an angle of 75 and draw a ray.
  3. At point B, construct an angle of 120 and draw BC = 6 cm.
  4. At point C, construct an angle of 90 and draw a ray intersecting the ray from point A at D.
  5. The quadrilateral ABCD is now complete.

side = 50

Solution:
