California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP)

The California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) serve as a comprehensive framework for educators across the state. These standards provide a common language and vision for the complex work of teaching, helping educators reflect on their practice and pursue continuous professional growth.

The Six Core Standards

Standard 1: Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning

This standard focuses on using knowledge of students' academic, social, and cultural backgrounds to inform instruction. Effective teachers connect content to students' lives and use a variety of instructional strategies to ensure all learners can access the curriculum.

Standard 2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning

Teachers are responsible for fostering an environment that promotes social development, student responsibility, and productive learning. This includes managing classroom procedures and ensuring the physical and emotional safety of every student.

Standard 3: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

To teach effectively, educators must have a deep understanding of their subject matter. This standard involves organizing curriculum to support student mastery of state-adopted academic content standards and ensuring that information is presented in a logical, coherent manner.

Standard 4: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students

Planning is a cornerstone of teaching. Teachers must use data and student assessment results to design learning experiences that challenge all students, accommodating diverse learning needs and incorporating appropriate technology.

Standard 5: Assessing Students for Learning

Assessment is not just about grading; it is about providing feedback. This standard covers the use of formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress, communicate learning goals, and adjust instruction based on evidence of student understanding.

Standard 6: Developing as a Professional Educator

The final standard emphasizes that teaching is a lifelong learning process. Educators are encouraged to reflect on their practice, collaborate with colleagues and families, and engage in professional development to better serve their students and the school community.

The Purpose of the CSTP

The CSTP is designed to support teachers at every stage of their career, from teacher candidates in preparation programs to veteran educators. By establishing these expectations, California ensures that all students receive high-quality instruction. These standards are foundational to the California Induction Program, providing a benchmark for mentor-teacher discussions and self-assessment.

Moving Toward Reflective Practice

The ultimate goal of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession is to foster a culture of inquiry. Rather than viewing teaching as a static set of tasks, the CSTP encourages teachers to ask: "How can I improve my instructional delivery to reach this specific group of students?" Through consistent self-reflection and alignment with these six standards, California educators contribute to a robust, equitable, and effective public education system.
