Course Description

This course is the first in the calculus sequence covering limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions with applications. Students will develop understanding of differential and integral calculus through conceptual development, problem solving, and mathematical modeling. The course emphasizes both theoretical concepts and practical applications in science, engineering, and economics.

Prerequisites

MATH 172 (Precalculus) with a grade of C- or better, or placement based on the mathematics placement exam.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of limits and evaluate limits using algebraic techniques and limit theorems
  • Define and determine continuity of functions at points and on intervals
  • Compute derivatives using the definition of derivative and differentiation rules
  • Apply derivatives to solve related rates problems, optimization problems, and curve sketching
  • Understand the relationship between differentiation and integration
  • Evaluate definite and indefinite integrals using substitution and other integration techniques
  • Apply integration to solve area and volume problems
  • Understand and apply the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
  • Interpret mathematical results in the context of real-world applications

  • Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th Edition by James Stewart
  • Graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-84, or TI-89 recommended)
  • Course notes and supplemental materials posted on Canvas

Homework Policy

Weekly homework assignments will be posted on Canvas by Friday and must be submitted by the following Friday at 11:59 PM. Late submissions will be accepted with a 10% deduction per day late, up to three days. Students are encouraged to collaborate on homework assignments but must write up their solutions independently and acknowledge any collaboration.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is essential for success in this course. Attendance will be taken at each class session. Students may miss up to 4 classes without penalty. After 4 absences, each additional absence will result in a 1% reduction in the final course grade. Exceptions will be made for documented illnesses, university activities, or emergencies.

Makeup Policy

Makeup exams will only be permitted for documented emergencies or university-approved reasons. Students must contact the instructor within 24 hours of missing an exam to be considered for a makeup. Quizzes cannot be made up, but the lowest quiz score will be dropped.

Academic Integrity

Academic honesty is fundamental to the educational process. All students are expected to adhere to the university's academic integrity policy. Cheating, plagiarism, or unauthorized collaboration on exams or assignments will not be tolerated and may result in a failing grade for the course and disciplinary action. All sources used in assignments must be properly cited.
