About Boston School Forest
Boston School Forest is a unique outdoor education center situated on 150 acres of diverse forest ecosystems just outside Boston, Massachusetts. For over 70 years, our forest has served as a living classroom where students of all ages explore, learn, and develop a deep connection with nature.
Established in 1952 through a partnership between local educators and conservationists, Boston School Forest was one of the first dedicated outdoor education facilities in the region. The founders recognized the transformative power of experiential environmental education and created this space to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities that complement classroom instruction.
Our mission is to foster environmental literacy, scientific understanding, and a lifelong commitment to conservation. Through direct experience with forest ecosystems, students develop critical thinking skills, observation techniques, and an appreciation for the natural world that extends far beyond their time at our facility.
Educational Programs
Boston School Forest offers a range of curriculum-aligned outdoor education programs designed to engage students in hands-on environmental learning. Forest Ecology Field Trips
Our signature program brings students to the forest for day-long explorations of diverse ecosystems. Students engage in scientific inquiry, observation, and data collection while learning about forest ecology, wildlife habitat, and conservation principles. Programs are customized for each grade level, aligning with classroom curriculum.
Watershed Education
Through our watershed-focused programs, students explore the ponds, streams, and wetlands within the forest. They investigate water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and the interconnectedness of water systems. These hands-on experiences help develop understanding of complex environmental science concepts.
Winter Ecology
Our winter programs demonstrate how forest ecosystems adapt to seasonal changes. Students track wildlife signs in snow, study winter adaptations of plants and animals, and conduct winter weather observations. These programs help students understand the dynamic nature of forest ecosystems year-round.
Conservation Service Learning
Through active participation in forest stewardship projects, students learn principles of conservation biology while making tangible contributions to ecosystem health. Projects may include invasive species removal, trail maintenance, tree planting, and habitat enhancement.
Nature Journaling
This interdisciplinary program combines scientific observation with artistic expression. Students develop observation skills, attention to detail, and appreciation for natural beauty while creating personal records of their experiences in the forest. Nature journaling strengthens connections to place and develops artistic and scientific literacy.
Natural History Workshops
Our focused workshops provide in-depth exploration of specific topics such as bird identification, tree identification, fungi, insects, or seasonal changes. These programs allow students to develop specialized knowledge and skills while experiencing the wonder of discovery in nature.
Forest Ecology
Boston School Forest encompasses exceptional ecological diversity across its 150 acres. The forest contains mixed hardwood communities dominated by oak, maple, birch, and beech trees, interspersed with coniferous stands of pine and hemlock. This varied canopy structure supports a rich understory of shrubs and wildflowers that change seasonally throughout the year.
Our wetland ecosystems include marshes, swamps, and vernal pools that provide critical habitat for amphibians, reptiles, and numerous bird species. These areas also serve as natural water filtration systems and play important roles in the forest's hydrology. The forest's three distinct ponds support aquatic plants and invertebrates, which in turn provide food for larger animals including painted turtles, great blue herons, and river otters.
The forest supports remarkable biodiversity of wildlife. Over 120 bird species have been documented, from common forest residents like chickadees and woodpeckers to neotropical migrants that nest here during summer. Mammal inhabitants include white-tailed deer, red and gray fox, raccoon, fisher, bobcat, and numerous small mammals. Reptiles such as garter snakes and salamanders are common, while spring peepers and wood frogs herald the seasonal changes in our wetlands.
Forest management at Boston School Forest incorporates sustainable forestry practices that maintain ecological health while supporting educational objectives. Regular monitoring tracks wildlife populations, forest growth, and ecosystem changes over time. We actively manage invasive species, maintain habitat diversity, and practice sustainable trail design to minimize human impact while maximizing educational value.

Trails and Facilities
Boston School Forest features approximately 3 miles of maintained trails that wind through various forest communities and habitats. Interpretive signs along the trails highlight ecological concepts, natural history, and management practices. Our education center includes classroom space, natural history displays, restrooms, and a small gift shop featuring educational resources.
