A bone marrow aspirate and biopsy are medical procedures used to collect and examine bone marrowthe spongy tissue found inside some of your larger bones. The procedure is usually performed in a hospital or clinic and takes about 30 minutes. Most commonly, the sample is taken from the back of the pelvic bone (the iliac crest).
Step 1: Positioning: You will likely lie on your side or stomach.
Step 2: Anesthesia: The area is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is injected to numb the skin and the surface of the bone. You may feel a brief stinging or burning sensation.
Step 3: Aspiration: The doctor inserts a thin needle into the bone and uses a syringe to draw out the liquid marrow. You may feel a sharp, brief sensation of pressure or pulling during this stage.
Step 4: Biopsy: The doctor uses a specialized, slightly larger needle to collect a core sample of the bone marrow. This may involve a dull aching sensation.
Once the procedure is finished, a bandage is applied to the site. It is normal to feel some soreness at the biopsy site for several days. Doctors usually recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for a day or two following the procedure. You should contact your healthcare provider if you experience persistent bleeding, fever, or increasing pain at the site.
The samples are sent to a laboratory where a pathologist examines the cells under a microscope.
