Blooms Taxonomy: A Guide for Educators and Learners

What Is Blooms Taxonomy?

Blooms Taxonomy is a framework that classifies learning objectives into hierarchical categories. Created in the mid20th century, it helps teachers design curriculum, assess student progress, and promote higherorder thinking. The taxonomy is often visualized as a pyramid, with basic knowledge acquisition at the base and complex analysis and creation at the top.

Historical Background

The original taxonomy was developed in 1956 by BenjaminBloom and a team of educational psychologists. Their goal was to provide a common language for educators to discuss learning goals. In 2001, a major revision led by Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl updated the model, shifting from a nounbased taxonomy to a verboriented one and reorganizing the levels.

The Three Domains of Learning

Cognitive Domain (Thinking)

This is the most widely used domain. It encompasses mental skills and knowledge acquisition. The revised cognitive domain comprises six levels, ranging from remembering facts to creating new products.

Psychomotor Domain (Physical Skills)

The Six Cognitive Levels (Revised Version)

1. Remember

Recall facts, terms, basic concepts, and answers. Typical verbs: list, define, name, recognize.

  • Recall the parts of a cell.

2. Understand

Interpret, exemplify, classify, summarize, infer, compare, and explain ideas.

  • Summarize a short story in your own words.
  • Explain how photosynthesis works.

3. Apply

Use information in new situations. Verbs include: execute, implement, solve, demonstrate.

  • Apply a mathematical formula to solve a physics problem.
  • Use a grammar rule to write a paragraph.

4. Analyze

Break information into parts to explore relationships. Verbs: differentiate, organize, attribute, compare.

  • Analyze the causes of a historical event.
  • Identify logical fallacies in an editorial.

5. Evaluate

Make judgments based on criteria and standards. Verbs: critique, defend, judge, validate.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a scientific experiment.
  • Critique a piece of artwork according to formal principles.

6. Create

Generate new ideas, products, or ways of viewing things. Verbs: design, construct, formulate, produce.

  • Design a marketing campaign for a new product.
  • Write an original short story that incorporates a specific theme.

Putting Blooms Taxonomy Into Practice

Curriculum Design

When planning units, educators can map objectives to each taxonomic level, ensuring a balanced progression from simple recall to creative synthesis.

Assessment Development

Tests and quizzes can be constructed with items that target different levels. A multiplechoice question might assess Remember, while a project brief can require Create.

Instructional Strategies
