Bengali Vowels (Swarabarna)

There are 11 primary vowels in Bengali. These characters are used at the beginning of words or as independent sounds. When attached to consonants, they take the form of specific signs known as kar.

The Bengali consonant system is structured logically, categorized by the place of articulation in the mouthsuch as velar, palatal, retroflex, dental, and labial sounds. There are 35 primary consonant characters.

Key Features of the Script
