Introduction

Welcome to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) Year III programme for the academic year 2019. This catalogue provides essential information about courses, curriculum, faculty, resources, and academic policies for Year III dental students.

The third year of the BDS programme focuses on developing clinical skills in various specializations of dentistry while building upon the foundational knowledge acquired in the previous years. Students will gain practical experience through clinical postings, laboratory work, and patient interaction under the guidance of experienced faculty members.

This year marks a transition from pre-clinical to clinical practice, with increased emphasis on disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and implementation of therapeutic procedures.

Programme Structure

The BDS Year III curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and clinical skills in core dental disciplines. The programme consists of the following components:

Course Details

Oral Pathology and Microbiology

This course introduces students to the pathogenesis of oral diseases and the fundamental principles of microbiology as they relate to oral health. Topics include inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, developmental disorders, neoplasms of oral tissues, microbial flora of the oral cavity, immunological aspects of oral diseases, and biopsy techniques.

General Medicine

This course provides knowledge about common systemic diseases that affect dental treatment and their interactions with oral health. Content includes clinical examination and history taking, common medical emergencies in dental practice, cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, respiratory diseases, blood disorders, and infectious diseases.

General Surgery

This course introduces fundamental surgical principles applicable to dental practice. Key topics include principles of surgery and surgical techniques, pre and post-operative care, shock and its management, wound healing and management, tumors, head and neck trauma, and maxillofacial injuries.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This course focuses on surgical management of oral and maxillofacial conditions. Curriculum includes exodontia techniques, management of impacted teeth, pre-prosthetic surgery, cysts and tumors of jaws, salivary gland disorders, facial deformities and orthognathic surgery, trauma management, temporomandibular joint disorders, and dental implants (introduction).

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

This course develops skills in restoring and maintaining teeth with structural defects or endodontic problems. Content covers dental caries and its management, principles of tooth preparation, direct and indirect restorative materials, amalgam restorations, composite restorations, veneers and laminates, endodontic diagnosis, root canal treatment techniques, and obturation techniques.

Periodontology

This course provides comprehensive knowledge about periodontal tissues and their diseases. The curriculum includes anatomy and physiology of periodontium, etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, gingival diseases, chronic periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, periodontal examination and diagnosis, scaling and root planing, surgical periodontal therapy, mucogingival surgery, periodontal regeneration, and maintenance therapy.

Orthodontics

This introductory course provides fundamental knowledge about orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. Topics include growth and development of craniofacial complex, normal occlusion, classification of malocclusion, etiology of malocclusion, diagnosis and treatment planning, principles of tooth movement, removable appliances, fixed appliances (introduction), and retainers and retention.

Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry

This course focuses on comprehensive dental care for children and prevention of dental diseases. Content includes child psychology and behavior management, development of dentition, caries prevention in children, restorative procedures for primary teeth, pulp therapy in primary dentition, space maintainers, management of dental injuries, preventive orthodontics, and public health dentistry.

Grading System

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance is essential for successful completion of the BDS Year III programme. Students are required to maintain minimum attendance as follows:

• Lectures: Minimum 75% attendance in each subject
• Clinical/Lab Sessions: Minimum 80% attendance in each department
• Seminars and Tutorials: 100% attendance is mandatory

Failing to meet the minimum attendance requirement will result in the student being debarred from appearing in the final examination.
