Why Both Are Essential

If a society focuses entirely on applied research, it may solve short-term problems but fail to innovate in the long term because it stops generating new fundamental knowledge. On the other hand, if a society focuses only on basic research, it may possess vast amounts of knowledge but lacks the technology and infrastructure to improve the quality of life, cure diseases, or protect the environment.
