Early Life and Education
Apoorvanand was born in the early 1960s in a small town of Uttar Pradesh. Growing up in a family that placed great value on learning, he was introduced to the rich oral and written traditions of Hindi language at an early age. He completed his primary and secondary schooling in his hometown before moving to Delhi for higher education.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hindi from Delhi Universitys Department of Hindi in 1982, followed by a Masters degree in the same discipline in 1984. His passion for comparative literature led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature and Linguistics, which he completed in 1990 under the mentorship of renowned scholar Dr. D. N. Jha. His dissertation, titled The Evolution of Narrative Technique in Modern Hindi Short Stories, is still cited by scholars exploring contemporary narrative forms.
Academic Career at the University of Delhi
In 1991, Professor Apoorvanand joined the University of Delhi as a lecturer in the Department of Hindi. Over the next three decades, he rose through the ranksassistant professor (1996), associate professor (2003), and full professor (2010). His teaching philosophy centres around critical empathyencouraging students to engage with texts both analytically and emotionally.
He has taught a broad spectrum of courses, including:

Professor Apovanands scholarship spans several interrelated fields:
- Modern Hindi Fiction: He has examined the works of Premchand, Saadat Hasan Manto, and contemporary writers such as Usha Priyamvada, tracing how sociopolitical contexts reshape narrative strategies.
- Poetics and Aesthetics: His articles on the KavyaMantra tradition explore the fusion of classical meters with modernist free verse.
- Language Policy and Identity: He frequently writes on the role of Hindi in postindependence nationbuilding, advocating for a plurilingual approach that respects regional linguistic ecologies.
- Comparative Literature: Engaging with Persian, Urdu, and Bengali literatures, he highlights shared motifs of migration, displacement, and resistance.

Public Engagement and Outreach
Beyond the university, Professor Apoorvanand is an active public intellectual. He frequently appears on cultural radio programmes such as Varta and JashneBhasha, where he discusses contemporary literary trends, language preservation, and the role of literature in fostering social cohesion.
He has organized several literary festivals, most notably the Delhi Hindi Literary Fest (DHILF) in 2015 and 2019, which brought together writers, translators, and scholars from across South Asia. The festivals featured panel discussions, poetry readings, and workshops on creative writing for underprivileged youth.
In 2021, Professor Apovanand launched the Hindi Heritage Digital Library, a collaborative project with the National Mission on Libraries to digitise rare manuscripts and early printed books in Hindi. The platform now hosts over 8,000 searchable items, making them accessible to scholars worldwide.

He has expressed interest in establishing a crossinstitutional centre for South Asian Linguistic Heritage, which would bring together scholars from India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh to explore shared literary histories and promote collaborative translation initiatives.
As the academic landscape evolves, Professor Apovanand remains committed to fostering critical inquiry, preserving the vitality of Hindi literature, and mentoring the next generation of scholars.
