APA Reference List Formatting Guide

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is widely used in academic writing, particularly in the social sciences. A crucial component of APA style is the reference list, which provides full bibliographic information for all sources cited in your paper. General Formatting Rules

Begin the reference list on a new page at the end of your document
Label the page "References" centered at the top (in bold)
Double-space the entire reference list
Use a hanging indent (first line flush left, subsequent lines indented 0.5 inches)
Arrange references alphabetically by the first author's surname
Italicize titles of books, reports, and periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers)
Capitalize only the first word of article, book, or chapter titles (and subtitles)
Capitalize proper names in titles (e.g., "The Psychology of Machiavellian Leaders")

Author Formatting

List all authors' names by surname first, then initials (e.g., Smith, J. A.)
Use commas to separate authors and "&" before the final author's name
List up to 20 authors; for 21 or more, list the first 19, insert an ellipsis (...), then add the final author's name
For works with no author, move the title to the author position (alphabetize by title)
For works with the same author and date, arrange alphabetically by title and add lowercase letters (a, b, c) after the year

Publication Date

Place the publication date in parentheses after the author's name
For books, include the year only: (2022)
For articles, include the year as well as month/day for magazines/newspapers: (2022, March 15)
For works with no date, use "n.d." in place of the year

Title Formatting

After the date, give the title of the work in sentence case (capitalize only the first word, proper nouns, and first word after a colon)
For journal articles, provide the article title without quotation marks, followed by the journal name in italics and title case
For books, italicize the book title in title case
For chapters or articles in edited books, place the article chapter title in normal font, then italicize the edited book title

Publication Information

For journals, include the volume number in italics, followed by the issue number in parentheses (not italicized), then page range
For books, include the publisher name; no location information is needed
Include DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for scholarly articles if available (format as https://doi.org/xxxxx)
When no DOI is available for online articles, include the URL (if from a library database, note the database name instead of the URL)

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)

DOIs provide stable links to digital content. When available, always include the DOI at the end of the reference. Format DOIs as active hyperlinks beginning with "https://doi.org/" followed by the numeric string. If a DOI is not available, include a URL if the work is freely available online. If the article is from a database that requires a subscription, include the database name instead.

In-Text Citations

Every source listed in your reference list must be cited in the text of your paper. Use the author-date citation system: include the author's last name and the year of publication in parentheses. For direct quotes, also include the page number.
