History
The American Chemical Society was founded on April 6, 1876, in New York City by 35 chemists who sought to create a national forum for the exchange of chemical knowledge. The first meeting took place in a small room at the Academy of Music, and the organization quickly grew, publishing its first journal, Journal of the American Chemical Society, in 1879.
Throughout the 20th century ACS expanded its influence by establishing regional sections, launching additional journals, and developing a robust program of conferences. By the turn of the millennium, ACS had become the worlds largest scientific society, representing over 160,000 members in more than 140 countries.
