Blood typing is a method to tell what type of blood you have. If a person receives a transfusion of incompatible blood, the bodys immune system will recognize the donor cells as foreign. This triggers a reaction where the immune system attacks the donor blood cells, leading to potentially life-threatening complications such as fever, chills, low blood pressure, and organ failure.
In addition to transfusions, Rh factor compatibility is crucial during pregnancy. If an Rh-negative mother is carrying an Rh-positive fetus, her immune system might produce antibodies against the fetal blood cells.
