What is a Plug Fest?
A Plug Fest is an industrywide, handson interoperability event organized by the IEEE 802.3 Working Group. Vendors bring live prototypes and productionready equipment to a neutral test lab where each device is paired with a wide variety of power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered devices (PD). The goal is to uncover realworld issues that are not evident in isolated compliance labs.
Scope of the 2025 802.3af Plug Fest
- Participants: 34 vendors (21 PSE, 13 PD)
- Device types: Network switches, IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and PoEinjectors
- Test matrix: 1,128 pairings, covering all four ClassAD power levels and both 48V and 56V nominal voltages

Top Failure Modes
- Inconsistent detection of PD class: 5 devices reported ClassC while actually drawing ClassB power, causing premature shutdown under load.
