Welcome to 6th grade science! This year marks an exciting transition in scientific learning as students expand from elementary science foundations to a more systematic approach to understanding the natural world. Our curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, develop critical thinking skills, and build scientific literacy through engaging hands-on activities, experiments, and digital resources.
Throughout this academic year, students will explore fundamental concepts across various scientific disciplines while developing essential inquiry skills. The course balances theoretical knowledge with practical applications, helping students recognize science as both a body of knowledge and a process of investigation.

The school year begins with an emphasis on the scientific method and laboratory safety. Students learn how to formulate testable questions, develop hypotheses, design controlled experiments, and analyze data. This quarter also introduces the fundamental concepts of matter, including physical and chemical properties, classification of matter (elements, compounds, mixtures), and states of matter. Students engage in hands-on activities such as separating mixtures and observing chemical reactions.
Building on the foundation of matter, students explore forms of energy, energy transformations, and the laws of motion. Topics include potential and kinetic energy, thermal energy transfer, waves, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Students investigate forces through a sports science lens, examining how principles of physics apply to various athletic activities. Simple machines and their role in changing the magnitude and direction of forces are also studied.
During this quarter, students investigate Earth's dynamic systems including plate tectonics, rock cycle, weather and climate, and water cycle. Hands-on activities include modeling the layers of Earth, simulating earthquakes, identifying rocks and minerals, and building weather instruments. Students learn about the scientific evidence supporting Earth's age and the theory of plate tectonics, connecting geology with the distribution of natural resources.
The final quarter focuses on the interactions between living organisms and their environment. Students learn about ecosystem dynamics, population relationships, food webs, and biomes. Weather patterns, their measurement, and prediction are studied alongside the water cycle. Environmental topics include renewable and nonrenewable resources, environmental conservation, and human impact on ecosystems. The quarter culminates with an independent science project where students apply the scientific method to a problem of personal interest.
