3Day Food, Fluid & Exercise Diary

Track what you eat, drink and move a simple tool for better health awareness.

Why Keep a 3Day Diary?

A shortterm diary gives you a realistic snapshot of your daily habits without the burden of a monthlong log. With only three days, you are more likely to stay consistent, yet you still collect enough data to spot patterns and identify areas for improvement in nutrition, hydration, and physical activity.

Tip: Choose two weekdays and one weekend day to capture both workday and leisure routines.

Recording Food Intake

For each meal and snack write down:

  • Time of consumption
  • Food & beverage name
  • Portion size (use common measures cups, slices, grams, etc.)
  • Estimated calories (optional)
  • Any feelings of hunger or fullness

Sample Food Table

Day Time Food / Drink Portion Notes
Day 1 07:30 Oatmeal with banana 1 cup Added honey
10:15 Greek yogurt 150g Plain
13:00 Grilled chicken salad 2 plates Dressed with olive oil
16:45 Apple 1 medium
19:30 Spaghetti Bolognese 1.5 cups Wholegrain pasta

Tracking Fluid Intake

Adequate hydration is essential for metabolism, cognition and exercise performance. Record:

  • Type of fluid (water, coffee, tea, juice, soda, etc.)
  • Volume consumed (ml or oz)
  • Time of consumption
  • Any symptoms (thirst, headache, dizziness)

Sample Fluid Log

Day Time Beverage Amount Notes
Day 1 06:45 Water 250ml First thing after waking
09:30 Coffee 200ml Black
12:20 Water 300ml
15:00 Green tea 150ml After workout

Logging Exercise

Capture both structured workouts and incidental activity. Include:

  • Type of activity (walking, cycling, strength training, yoga, etc.)
  • Duration (minutes)
  • Intensity (light, moderate, vigorous)
  • Distance or repetitions when applicable
  • How you felt before and after

Sample Exercise Table

Day Activity Start Time Duration Intensity Notes
Day 1 Morning jog 07:00 30 min Moderate 2.5km, felt refreshed
Day 1 Strength circuit 18:00 45 min Vigorous Fullbody, 3 sets each
Day 2 Evening walk 19:30 40 min Light 3km, cool weather

How to Review Your Diary

Once the three days are complete, take a moment to look for trends:

  1. Balance of food groups Are fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains represented?
  2. Fluid total Aim for 1.52L of waterbased drinks per day, adjusting for activity and climate.
  3. Exercise consistency Does the total weekly moderateintensity equivalent reach at least 150minutes?
  4. Timing patterns Are meals clustered too tightly or spread apart causing energy dips?
  5. Subjective feelings Note any fatigue, hunger, or digestive issues that correlate with your logs.

You do not need sophisticated software to analyse the data. A simple penandpaper review or a quick spreadsheet can highlight the most important points.

Next Steps After the Diary

Based on what you discover, choose one or two realistic changes for the coming week:

  • Increase water intake by adding a glass before each meal.
  • Swap a sugary snack for a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts.
  • Insert a 10minute brisk walk after lunch on days you are sedentary.
  • Plan meals ahead to avoid oversized portions in the evening.

Keep the diary format handy and repeat the 3day log every month. Small, measurable adjustments compound into lasting health benefits.
